One of the most widely used spices in the world is black pepper. It is created by grinding dried berries from the Piper nigrum vine called peppercorns. It pairs well with a variety of foods thanks to its crisp and gently spicy flavour. But black pepper has many purposes than just seasoning food. Due to the “king of spices” status and the abundance of strong, advantageous plant chemicals it contains, Ayurvedic medicine has employed it for thousands of years.

Description

What is Black Pepper?

In reality, peppercorns are the ripe fruits of a Piperaceae family blooming vine. Where the cylindrical clusters of ripening berries are, the green, broad-leaved vines extend lengthy tendrils. The tiny fruits have a thin skin, little actual fruit inside, and one big seed. Depending on the type and strength of pepper wanted, the fruits are selected at various stages of maturity and processed accordingly.

Black Pepper Whole Peppercorn is grown over almost all tropical areas. Approximately 35% of the world’s supply of black pepper is currently produced and exported by Vietnam, which is followed by India, Brazil, China, and Sri Lanka. Pepper is the most traded spice in the world, accounting for 20% of all spice trade and used in almost every type of cuisine imaginable. In actuality, the annual value of the black pepper trade is in the billions!

Given that this pungent little spice has been adored for hundreds of years, it shouldn’t come as a huge surprise. Its main use for a very long time was as medicine. The herb was also employed to preserve mummies. Peppercorns were jammed into Ramses the Great’s nostrils before he was killed.

A substance called piperine that is present in the fruit and seed of peppercorns gives them their distinctive bite. Peppercorns and ground pepper should be stored correctly or utilized right away because piperine can actually degrade when exposed to heat, air, and light. Pepper needs to be used right away or well kept.
